Bahama Homes for Sale
Bahama was originally settled around 1750 as the community of Balltown until the name was changed to reflect the three prominent families of the community: The Ball’s, The Harris’ and the Mangum’s, hence BA-HA-MA. Another unusual name associated with the community is Hunkadora, a name for the post office located there for a time during the 1800’s.
Bahama is a small community in Durham County with a small population. Bahama is home to Mangum Elementary School and is a Durham Public School. For other schooling, students attend Durham Public Schools.
Nathaniel Harris in the mid-eighteenth century acquired a tract of 6,000 acres in what is now the community of Bahama in northern Durham County. His son Archer built a meeting house around 1784 which operated for the benefit of all denominations until 1808 when it affiliated with the Methodist Church. The first building was a log structure and was used by all who desired to worship. The present church building was completed in 1949 and is the congregation’s sixth.
Today Bahama is home to many individuals who work in and around Durham County. It is a quiet place with many sprawling parcels of land that range from small to very large.
